Rugged Servers

U.S. Navy On-board Image Processing

CRI designed and developed a custom rugged server for the US Navy’s Virginia-Class submarine to support onboard image processing. The application's unique spatial, functional and mounting requirements called for us to design a custom-footprint, ATX-equivalent power supply that would leave enough remaining space in the 2U server to accommodate all of the required computational and storage components. The final design included dual Intel CPUs, a SCSI HDD, a flash drive, an optical drive, an AIT tape drive, as well as PCI slots. This server is installed in a shock-isolated and meets applicable Mil-spec environmental standards. The front panel is machined aluminum, and the chassis is supported by reinforcing bars. The unit ...

R550i Workstation

U.S. Air Force Early-Warning Surveillance Equipment

Working with Raytheon Integrated Defense Systems, CRI performed custom hardware modifications to their Upgraded Early-Warning Radar (UEWR) system - a phased array surveillance radar used to track ballistic missiles. The upgrade consisted of designing and replacing existing workstations, displays, and encryptors with ruggedized versions of the same. The components were installed in a high-terrain, mountainous, Zone-4 seismic activity area that was highly susceptible to earthquakes. The equipment was built to comply with the Uniform Building code (UBC) Zone-4 earthquake standards, and also complied with Mil-spec thermal standards and low noise level requirements of less than 50dB. CRI’s solution included a Dual quad core Xeon CPU ...

Wire Harness

Commercial Aerospace Build-to-Print Services

In this specialty job CRI provided build-to-print services to create/supplement an inventory of critical spare part assemblies for aircraft that had been in service for 25-30 years. These assemblies were designed and built for use in propeller driven and jet aircraft supported by our customer, and included printed wire boards (PWBs) and various electromechanical parts. We began by interpreting customer drawings, schematics, and wire diagrams to identify the components. We then coordinated with the customer’s engineering department to determine the best way of revising the Bills of Material (BOM) and drawings to reflect the replacement of obsolete parts with suitable substitutes. This interaction was critical to maintaining desired ...

MobileEye® Router

Mining Heavy Equipment Monitoring

A major equipment supplier to the mining industry approached CRI seeking a rugged solution to support vehicle-mounted data transmission. Specifically, the customer needed to send on-board sensor data from their operating hauling / moving equipment to a centralized analysis and control system. The data was an essential part of a testing program to determine how their equipment would respond to the demanding operational conditions in which their heavy vehicles are typically used. CRI designed and built rugged wireless routers which were mounted on the exterior of the client's heavy equipment to provide reliable, continuous data transmission. The routers were built to withstand harsh environmental conditions (i.e. rain, ice, dust, ...

Rack Intergration Example 1

Oil Exploration and Development Well Logging Equipment

In support of our customer’s wireline services business serving the oil patch, CRI built prototype and production quantities of fully integrated LogiQ power and telemetry control panels (PTC) for use in logging trucks. The LogiQ systems consisted of various electronic boxes assembled by CRI per customer specifications and similar equipment procured from customer-specified vendors. Additional components included wafer switches, custom printed-circuit boards, PC104-based computers, displays, connectors and interconnecting cables. CRI installed and integrated all equipment into customer-supplied racks, which were then installed into our customer’s logging trucks used in the field to support oil & gas exploration and development ...
